What Control Knob Loose On Shaft Means
Bertazzoni's range manuals attribute a knob that wobbles or pulls off to a damaged retaining spring clip, and ask owners to call for advice and a replacement. On a gas range this matters more than on an electric one, because that knob is the handle on a gas tap.
Common Causes of Control Knob Loose On Shaft
- A retaining clip splayed by knobs being levered off sideways for cleaning
- Years of heat ageing the spring, worst on the knobs nearest the oven door
- A worn tap shaft no longer giving the clip anything to grip
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Pull the knob straight off and look at the clip inside the collar - a spring that has splayed or snapped is usually visible at a glance. Check the shaft behind it still has its flats intact and turns crisply between positions; if the shaft is worn too, the knob alone will not fix it.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Close the gas shut-off valve to the range before a loose knob is worked on, because a knob that slips on its shaft can open a tap without the pointer ever moving.
- A knob that can be turned without the tap following, or the reverse, is the dangerous version of this problem and takes the burner out of use until it is sorted.
- Knob styles and finishes are specific to the Professional, Master and Heritage lines, so a close-looking knob from another series usually sits proud or clashes with the trim.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
