Induction cooking works by generating a rapidly alternating magnetic field beneath the glass surface, which means the components underneath are meaningfully different, and riskier to handle, than what’s inside a standard electric or gas cooktop.
High-Voltage Components Retain Charge
The power electronics that drive an induction coil include capacitors capable of storing a dangerous electrical charge even after the unit has been fully disconnected from power. Contact with a charged component can cause a serious shock, and there’s no reliable way to visually confirm a capacitor has discharged without proper equipment.
The Coils Themselves Are Delicate
Beyond the electrical risk, the induction coils and their surrounding insulation are precisely calibrated during manufacturing. Improper handling during a DIY repair attempt can misalign or damage them in ways that aren’t obvious until the cooktop is back in use and heating unevenly or not at all.
