An ice maker that’s producing less ice than usual, or has stopped entirely, is a common but narrow problem. Work through these checks before assuming the worst.
Step 1: Confirm the Arm or Switch Is On
Depending on your model, the ice maker is either enabled with a small wire arm or a control panel switch. It’s easy for either to get bumped into the off position accidentally, especially during a shelf reorganization.
Step 2: Check the Water Line for Freezing
If the freezer compartment is running colder than typical, the water supply line feeding the ice maker can occasionally freeze at a bend or a poorly insulated section, cutting off water flow even though the unit itself is functioning correctly.
Step 3: Inspect the Water Filter
A water filter that’s overdue for replacement restricts flow gradually rather than stopping it outright, which often shows up first as smaller, oddly shaped ice cubes before production slows further.
Step 4: Rule Out a Supply Issue
Confirm the household water line valve feeding the refrigerator is fully open, particularly if any plumbing work has been done nearby recently.
