What Smoke In The Oven Means

Bertazzoni treats smoke from the oven cavity as a cooking and cleaning matter rather than a problem, and asks four questions: is the temperature set too high, is the food high in fat, is the grill rarely used, and does the interior need cleaning. Fat deposits on the oven roof from past grilling are the usual culprit.

Common Causes of Smoke In The Oven

  • Fat deposits on the oven roof burning off from previous grilling
  • High-fat food cooked in a shallow dish that lets splashes reach the elements
  • A conventional recipe temperature used with a fan function, running the cavity hotter than intended

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Turn the oven off and let the smoke clear with the extraction running before you open the door wide. Then clean the cavity properly, use high-sided dishes for fatty roasts, and drop the temperature by around 70F when a fan function is used with a conventional recipe.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Let the cavity cool and the smoke clear before reaching in, because burning fat spits and the oven roof is the hottest surface in there.
  • Oven cleaner sprayed into a warm cavity produces fumes the cleaner manufacturers themselves warn against, so cleaning waits for a cold oven.
  • Smoke that has nothing to do with food - an electrical or plastic smell in particular - is a different problem entirely, and the range should be switched off at its breaker rather than aired out.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

Smoke In The Oven FAQ

Usually old fat baked onto the roof or the element. A proper clean, or a cleaning cycle on models that have one, normally settles it.

Bertazzoni recommends reducing by about 70F, because moving air transfers heat into food faster than still air at the same setting.
